Hair loss is one of the most distressing side effects of cancer treatment and many people choose to cover up a hairless head with a wig or a hat. Finding the right size hat is important for comfort and style.
One size fits most
Most cancer headwear tends to be one size fits all. Lots of cancer headwear is made from stretchy material in a standard size, meaning the hat will stretch to comfortably fit the which will fit the vast majority of people.
What is the 'average' size head?
The average female head size is between 21.5 inches (54.61 cm) and 22.7 inches (57.66 cm) in circumference.
The average male head size is between 22.5 inches (57.15 cm) and 24.2 inches (61.46 cm) in circumference.
The majority of the cancer headwear listed in the CancerPal MarketPlace is one size fits all. Our women's cancer headwear fits on average 21.25-22.5 inches (54-57 cm) and our men's cancer headwear is slightly larger.
Some of our suppliers make headwear in different sizes and if this is the case, this information will be included in the ‘sizing’ section on the product page and you will be asked to select a size during the order process.
Sizing is important for comfort
If you are wearing a hat because of hair loss, you will tend to wear it for longer periods of time, for example if you are going to wear a sleep hat, this will be on your head all night.
It's therefore important that any hat you choose fits snugly without being too loose or too tight.
If you have lost your hair, there will be no cushion between your delicate scalp and the headwear, so it's important that there aren't any pressure points or sore spots.
Measuring your head
To measure your head, wrap a sewing tape firmly, but not too tightly around your head. The tape should go across your forehead just above your eyebrows, above your ears and around the widest part of your head.
If you don’t have a sewing tape, you can use a piece of string or ribbon to measure and then lay it flat against a ruler.
What if my head is smaller or larger than average?
Once you've measured your head, if you find that it is significantly smaller or larger than average, you may need to consider purchasing a hat that has been made to measure.
Some of our suppliers make their headwear to order in different sizes. If you are looking for chemo headwear in a smaller or larger than average size we would especially recommend the following styles:
